Meet Our Team - Doctor Of Chinese Medicine Helen Bourke

You’ve had an impressive 12 years of clinical experience. Tell us a little about your Chinese Medicine journey? What made you decide to practice this modality?

After uni and an amazing internship in China seeing TCM integrated into mainstream medicine, I started practicing in community acupuncture clinics in Richmond and Collingwood. As a graduate, it was a great opportunity to work alongside experienced practitioners, and inspiring to see how acupuncture can really help people with chronic, and often debilitating conditions. I've really enjoyed treating people with a range of conditions in clinics around Melbourne since, and have learnt so much from all the practitioners and patients I have worked with along the way. The beauty about being a Chinese Med practitioner is you are continuously learning, evolving and sharing with other people, so there's a lot to enjoy and love about it!

I discovered Chinese Medicine (TCM) when I was at uni studying Human Biology alongside TCM students. I'd never heard of TCM at the time and wanted to find out more about it, so took on an extra subject in it. I found it fascinating. I loved the way TCM looks at the body as whole, like an eco-system within the greater ecosystem of our environment. Everything is connected.

I also love how Chinese Med can work so well on its own, but can also support and complement Western Med treatments and other modalities as well.

What feels important to you this year?

Catching up with family and friends, and making the most of any opportunities that come my way. You never know what's around the corner.

How do you spend your days off?

I love being outdoors, and really enjoy going for a hit of tennis, bush walks, going to the beach, gardening, catching up with friends and going on adventures with my hubby and kids.

What are you looking forward to now that restrictions have eased?

Returning to my home town in country Vic to see my beautiful fam and friends was the first thing I did when restrictions eased. It was so good to see them again! Now I'm really looking forward to live music, winery lunches with friends, escaping to the country and camping under the stars.
