What is Myotherapy?

Many people wonder what the difference is between Remedial Massage and Myotherapy.

Both treatments use hands-on techniques to reduce pain and improve movement, but Myotherapy has a broader scope.

In addition to manual therapy, Myotherapists are trained to assess how your muscles, joints and movement patterns contribute to pain. Treatment may include dry needling, cupping, rehabilitation exercises, stretching, movement correction and education to help prevent your symptoms from returning.

Rather than simply treating sore muscles, Myotherapy aims to identify and address the underlying cause of your pain.

When Should You See a Myotherapist?

Myotherapy is particularly helpful for people experiencing ongoing or more complex musculoskeletal conditions.

You may benefit from myotherapy if you're experiencing:

  • Persistent neck or back pain

  • Recurrent headaches or migraines

  • Sports injuries

  • Shoulder pain or rotator cuff injuries

  • Sciatica

  • Jaw pain (TMJ)

  • Tendon injuries

  • Muscle tightness affecting movement

  • Chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia

  • Pain that keeps returning despite previous treatment

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Every consultation begins with a thorough discussion about your symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

Your Myotherapist will assess your posture, movement and affected muscles before developing a treatment plan specific to your condition.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include:

  • Hands-on soft tissue therapy

  • Dry needling

  • Cupping therapy

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Stretching

  • Rehabilitation exercises

  • Home advice to support long-term recovery

Because every person is different, no two treatment plans are exactly the same.

As an established multidisciplinary clinic in Mornington, our Myotherapists work closely with our Acupuncturists and Remedial Massage Therapists to provide integrated care where appropriate.

If your condition would benefit from a combination of therapies, your practitioners can work together to create the most effective treatment plan.

Patients choose our clinic because we provide:

  • Experienced Myotherapists

  • Individualised treatment plans

  • Evidence-informed care

  • Private health rebates

  • Online booking

  • Late afternoon and Saturday appointments

Most importantly, we focus on understanding why your pain developed—not simply treating the symptoms.

Pregnancy Myotherapy

Pregnancy places significant additional demands on the muscles and joints, particularly through the lower back, hips and pelvis.

Our Myotherapists are trained in pregnancy treatment and use a specialised pregnancy pillow that allows most clients to comfortably lie face down throughout much of their pregnancy.

Treatment may assist with muscular tension, postural discomfort and improving comfort as your body changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Myotherapy and Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage focuses on hands-on treatment of muscles and soft tissues.

Myotherapy includes these techniques but also incorporates detailed assessment, rehabilitation exercises, dry needling, cupping and movement correction, making it particularly suitable for ongoing or complex musculoskeletal conditions.

Learn more about our Remedial Massage services.

Does Myotherapy include dry needling?

Where appropriate, yes.

Dry needling is one of several techniques a Myotherapist may use as part of your treatment plan. Your therapist will always discuss whether it's suitable for your condition.

Can I claim through my private health fund?

Yes. If your policy includes myotherapy, rebates are available with participating health funds. We also have HICAPS available for on-the-spot claiming.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required.

Can I use my Support at Home package?

Yes. If your package includes funding for myotherapy or remedial massage, you're welcome to use it at our clinic.
